Benton Township to pay more for Medic 1 services

BENTON TOWNSHIP — Benton Township officials passed a subsidy rate increase for Medic 1 Ambulance at their Tuesday board meeting.

Taking effect in March, the monthly charge for Medic 1 will rise from about $8,700 to $9,000.

“In the last five years, we’ve seen between a $3,000 to $5,000 increase each year,” Comptroller Ben Brewer said. “So, it shouldn’t be a surprise that it is happening again this year.”

While on the lower end of Brewer’s expected annual increase, the approval will cost the township an additional $3,600 annually.

Due to subsidies, residents of Medic 1 supporting municipalities receive a reduced rate, according to the Medic 1 website. However, users will still be charged for the base rate, mileage and oxygen if used.

Benton Township’s approval comes after the ambulance service’s recent proposal to increase their subsidiary rate in St. Joseph Township by 22 percent.

In addition to Benton and St. Joseph townships, Medic 1 also serves 15 other municipalities within Berrien County.

With township population totals determining subsidy amounts, monthly rates are affecting some municipalities more than others.

However, Treasurer Debbie Boothby said the service is worth the price – even with Benton Township being one of the most populated jurisdictions in the county.

“Their response time is so good,” Boothby said. “They’re a good team and a great service to offer to the community.”
