Our History
In the heart of Berrien County, a revolutionary concept was born. Community Emergency Service, Inc emerged on May 5, 1975, uniting local leaders with a shared vision. Together, they sought to transform the struggling private ambulance services and bring forth a new era of exceptional care.
Driven by the desire to do better, Community Emergency Service, Inc. stepped in to support Action Ambulance, and later Rampart Ambulance, with tax support. But they knew they could do more; they could build something greater.
Out of their frustration, Medic 1 Ambulance was born. Unleashed on February 24, 1977, this municipally owned service entered the scene with vigor. With just a handful of dedicated employees and two brand-new ambulances, they fearlessly ventured into the unknown, covering ten cities and townships. That first year, they answered the call for help 3,797 times, forever changing the landscape of emergency medical services in the region.
Medic 1 Ambulance’s commitment to innovation shone bright. In 1979, they proudly introduced the area’s very first Advanced Life Support (ALS) unit. By 1980, this pioneering organization had logged an astounding 5,550 calls for service, with 370 of them receiving lifesaving ALS interventions. Their impact was growing, and the locals took notice.
As the 80s unfolded, Medic 1 Ambulance embraced the concept of all ALS services. They continuously expanded their reach and capabilities. Today, boasting five strategically located stations and a fleet of state-of-the-art vehicles, Medic 1 Ambulance covers twenty cities and townships in Berrien and Van Buren Counties.
With over eighty dedicated team members, they are relentless in their pursuit of excellence. Advanced Life Support is their specialty. They also provide a specialized wheelchair transport service, operate a full-time Dispatch center, and maintain an Education Department dedicated to knowledge and skill enhancement.
Their humble beginnings may have seen them answering 3,797 calls, but now Medic 1 Ambulance is an unstoppable force. Responding to an average of over 29,000 requests for service, their commitment to their communities has never wavered. They’ve grown, evolved, and shaped the very landscape of emergency medical services.
